The new Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts Campus
Brock’s Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts is working with the City of St. Catharines to establish a multi-venue arts complex in the heart of the Niagara region.
Named in honour of renowned Canadian fibre artist Marilyn I. Walker and her historic $15-million gift to the project, the school will operate alongside the City-built Niagara Centre for the Performing Arts.
Not only will it open the doors to our students’ talent, it will also provide urgently needed facilities for the community to express its own creativity and share cultural traditions.
The project will revitalize the urban core with signature architecture, renovated heritage buildings and new performance and staging facilities to house hundreds of live events each year. And 500 full-time students and faculty will be relocated from their current overextended and cramped quarters into this new, energized downtown setting.
The downtown location of the school will mean that Brock will have a stronger presence within the community. Not only will it be recognized by the residents of St. Catharines, it will also be involved with tourism and arts within the Niagara Peninsula, as it will now be located on the Wine Route.
The new school will be beside nGen, an incubator for small- and medium-sized companies in digital humanities. nGen will take research discoveries and creative ideas from research in the school to create economic growth in the community, and students will find ready employment for their skills.
Our goal is to create an inspiring place to house and showcase professional artists of local, national and international stature for the enrichment of the greater Niagara community. It will also be a place to foster the next generation of artists.
